Intent
It is our intent that we make music an inspiring and enjoyable learning experience which develops the children’s musical skills and prepares them in readiness for secondary school. We encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences to develop a love of music and develop their talent as musicians, and in turn increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.
Our teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to understand rhythm and follow a beat through performing on a range of musical instruments. By singing songs, children learn about the structure and organisation of music. We teach them to listen and to appreciate different forms of music across different time periods, cultures and traditions. This supports children to understand the cultural capital of being open minded in their listening as well as knowledgeable about a breadth of musical genres in the world today. The children learn to appreciate how music supports other areas of the curriculum such as dance and drama.
Children develop descriptive language skills in music lessons when learning about how music can represent different feelings, emotions and narratives. We also teach technical vocabulary such as volume, pitch, beat and rhythm and encourage children to discuss music using these terms. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose and to listen with confidence.
Implementation
Our pupils will learn that music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. They will be inspired and engaged by music education. Music lessons will engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and develop their talent as musicians, and in turn increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.
The Charanga scheme of work is used from EYFS – Year 2 to ensure a wide exposure to different genres of music, with lots of practical opportunities to explore and develop as musicians and singers. Our Year 3 and 4 children are taught a bespoke music curriculum incorporating whole class World music lessons in djembe, samba and taiko through a 2 yearly planned cycle of lessons working alongside Lincolnshire Music Service peripatetic staff. Alongside these Mash up lessons the children also receive singing, composition, listening and musical appreciation lessons building on their knowledge and skills year on year. Our Year 5 and 6 children are taught brass instruments through a similarly planned 2 yearly cycle of lessons. These lessons incorporate teaching musical notation, composition, singing, as well as learning to play an instrument. Termly Wow afternoons, when families are invited into school provide a performance opportunity for every KS2 child to perform to an audience and develop confidence.
Additional opportunities are offered in music, such as the Key Stage 1 choir and the Key Stage 2 choir which performs regularly in school and at events in the local community as well as the annual Music For Youth Festival. We also offer our brass players a continuation opportunity to rehearse weekly and perform in our band T-Jazz, to play at the MFY Festival and collaborate with other local musicians such as Boston Mash up Band. We adapt our curriculum at times when we are invited to participate in a collaborative event so that our children have the opportunity to learn and rehearse for performance opportunities such as the School Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in November 2022. We also aim to provide the children with live music opportunities to hear professionals perform a range of genres using a variety of instruments.

Award Winning Music Curriculum
During our most recent Ofsted inspection in March 2018 the children spoke to the inspector ‘about the range of musical …..opportunities from which they benefit’ leading him to conclude that ‘the rich curriculum makes a strong contribution to pupils’ love of learning and their personal development’.
Our school has built a strong reputation for providing our children with a wide range of musical opportunities (supported by Lincolnshire Music Service) including whole class brass lessons and world music for our younger KS2 children. We have a totally inclusive KS2 choir, a KS1 choir and a community wind band, T-Jazz, who have performed regularly at the Lincolnshire Schools’ Prom and the Regional Music For Youth Festival. We have collaborated with Bano Jazz and in July performed together at Birmingham Town Hall at the Music For Youth Festival. Our Pop Choir also took to the stage with great confidence. The power of music brings our children, parents, staff, governors and the local community together. It is a real team effort.
In recognition of the quality and dedication to music our school has won Lincolnshire's Primary School Music Department twice in the past 6 years.
